North Carolina Hog Farms Spray Manure Around Black Communities; Residents Fight Back

  • North Carolina
  • Billions of gallons of pig feces and urine are collected in lagoons, mixed with blood and rotting pig body parts.
  • The waste falls through the floors. It’s flushed out into an open pit, like a cesspool. It’s easy for a big hog operation to have as much waste as a medium-sized city. Of course, the pit will fill up, so it has to be emptied. And they’re emptied by spraying the liquid waste.
  • the toxic liquid is pumped skyward with enormous spray devices, aerosolizing the waste, which is carried away by the wind.
  • Last week, North Carolina lawmakers passed House Bill 467, which limits the damages that residents could collect against hog farms.
  • Residents living in the area of the spray complain of odor so bad it limits their ability to be outdoors, and adverse health effects.
  • ELSIE HERRING: “You think it’s raining. We don’t open the doors up or the windows, but the odor still comes in. It takes your breath away. Then you start gagging. You get headaches.”

#Flint: More Than 8,000 Residents Receive Notice of Tax Liens on Their Properties for Unpaid Water Bills

  • Here is your regular reminder that the residents of Flint, Mich., have not had clean water for just over three years. Unfortunately, they are still expected to pay water bills for water that is neither drinkable nor usable, and on the heels of last month’s shut-offs for nonpayment of said water bills, this month, residents are being threatened with the loss of their homes.
  • Melissa Mays, a mother and activist who lives in Flint, received a notice in the mail Friday that states that if she doesn’t pay nearly $900 by May 19, a lien will be placed on her property.
  • Those who received the notices have water bills that have not been paid for six months or more. For those who do not pay by the deadline, a lengthy process begins that could end in foreclosure.

The House Votes to Repeal Obamacare

  • MAY 4, 2017
  • And so on Thursday, after an embarrassing early failure and weeks of fits and starts, a narrow GOP majority passed legislation to partially repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act that even many of its supporters conceded was deeply flawed. The party-line vote was 217-213, with 20 Republicans voting against. The bill now goes to the Senate, where its fate is uncertain at best.
  • cuts nearly $900 billion from Medicaid while curtailing the program’s expansion

Republican Bill Still Exempts Republicans in Congress From Repeal of Obamacare Protections (Updated)

  • But right now it sure looks like Republicans in Congress are about to pass, on a party-line vote, a bill that would revoke health care protections for most Americans but protect them for Republicans in Congress.

Is Facebook targeting vulnerable youths? Leaked documents suggest the firm is exploiting the moods of teenagers to benefit advertisers

  • Facebook has come under fire after leaked documents have revealed that the firm is targeting potentially vulnerable youths.
  • The confidential document, which is dated this year, details how by monitoring posts, comments and interactions on the site, Facebook can work out when children as young as 14 feel ‘overwhelmed’, ‘defeated’, ‘stressed’, ‘anxious’, ‘nervous’, ‘stupid’, ‘silly’, ‘useless’ and a ‘failure.’

This guy fixed his teeth by 3D printing his own plastic braces for $60

  • An undergraduate at New Jersey Institute of Technology made his own plastic braces using a 3D printer, $60 of materials, and a healthy dose of ingenuity — and they actually worked.
  • Amos Dudley had braces in middle school, but he didn’t wear a retainer like he was supposed to, so his teeth slowly shifted back.
  • He didn’t want to shell out thousands of dollars for a whole new round of braces, so the digital-design major decided to make his own.
